Let's face it, the planet Earth is a beautiful place, one that we hope can outlast humanity, but unfortunately, many of us are not able to travel around the globe to see just how wondrous it really is. Thankfully, we have photo contests, like this one, held by Smithsonian Magazine, that give everyone a glimpse at its beauty. The history of Smithsonian began when Edward K. Thompson, the retired editor of Life magazine, was asked by the then-Secretary of the Smithsonian, S. Dillon Ripley, to produce a magazine "about things in which the Smithsonian [Institution] is interested, might be interested or ought to be interested.
