Could these be the final working designs for OLPC's $100 laptop? Just a quick refresher, it features a 500mhz Processor, Linux OS, 1GB Memory, and a Two-Mode Display (Color and B&W). This laptop can either be charged with an AC Adaptor or via Handcrank (up to 10 minutes of use). [engadget]

NOT techi enough, could be a real design statement, but look too much like toys. A tough ambigous (retro/futuristic) look with grey silver finish would look better. It needs to look alien.

Why do I get the feeling that the people in the third world that receive these things will just sell them for money?
5
What i dont understand is why dont they make a crank on every laptop on the market? id def be willing to crank my laptop for more power.

That's a great deal. It's powerful enough for Genesis/SNES emulation. Only $100? Great for a grandma.

I think it is sad that the Idea is that the third world needs cheap labtops. There is so much else that they can be doing then surfing the net and writing blogs about how poor they are and how they havent eaten in 3 days.Like take the average yearly income of some countries:The avearge Somalia family brings in about $600 a year and the people in over 160 countries make less than $10,000 a year. What makes the company feel that even though its cheap people are going to want it.That said I agree should be powerful enough to run some emulators. If so id by 1 for $100.

Seriously... This in other third world countries would cost too much for people to buy... When I lived in Brazil there was a place called "the paraguai fair" that selled every pirate thing you could imagine... And cheap... I bought a LOT of ps2 games for only 5 Reals that is like 2 dollars... So people wont buy this shitty laptop if you can buy a "perfect" pirate one for the same price...

I read a article on this in popular something and it is supposed tO be used for e-mail. WHO THE FUCK SENDS AN E-MAIL TO SOMEONE IN A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY??? OR BETTER STILL, WHO HAS AN E-MAIL ADDRESS IN A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY?

I agree that the poor in most 3rd world countries need something that will better their lives. What will they use a $100 laptop for? To scam more stupid Americans with "emails from Ethiopia" promising to share an inheritance? I think they might prefer $100 worth of sheep or cows, $100 worth of clean water or $100 worth of democracy (send them a congressman).

I see that is mostly negitive responses on here but nobody is holding a gun your head and telling you to purchase this laptop. Personally, I happen to think this is a wonderful idea being that everyone is not fed with a silver spoon. What about the Low Income Families in the United States, Canada, England and so on. Most cant even afford to purchase a Used Desktop running Windows 98. Also, I think it's a great idea to make it available for the families to learn a secure and stable operating system other than microsoft windows. Learning Linux and Unix is what i perfer to anyone that wants to learn how to operate computers and most people disagree with me but teaching someone a easy interface isnt always helpful. Most "Elite" People online havnt experienced Freedom yet. So Until then I would liek to recommend most of the Dimwitted People online that happen to thing this is not a good idea to think again. - Michael

The tech fanboys criticizing this laptop as a toy, demonstrate precisely WHY it's such a great idea. If it's given as foreign aid, or UN aid to a poor kid, and all they want to do with it is play SNES games, then yeah, they will sell it. For a lot less than $100, obviously. With a core duo in it, and a DVD drive, that would be a huge issue. The dual-mode screen, the ad hoc networking - isn't it obvious that this thing is meant to be used in place of textbooks? Even in the richest countries there are public schools without enough textbooks to supply a whole class. In poorer countries, textbooks are often decades out of date and completely lacking in many subjects. With this, a teacher or advanced student takes their machine to an internet cafe or government office, loads it up with freely available and up-to-date info (and copyright be damned I say) - voila, forty textbooks. How many textbooks do you get for $100? If they're up-to-date and well-written, probably about three. And to the point about kids selling their laptop to buy food: who's going to buy them? You see how many they plan to make? The market would get saturated pretty quickly I reckon. You want to make sure that 512M/1G RAM can't be taken out and used in any other box, of course, and it might help to flood the Western market with the things first. For instance: http://www.pledgebank.com/100laptop Anyone whose attitude is "if it isn't the latest and best, it's useless" deserves to have their lunch eaten by some Pakistani kid whose only pair of shoes used to be her brothers. Ha ha!
