Chris Lomont and Gene Foulk created this RGB 3D LED cube for artistic purposes, it's basically a "large, animated, self contained visualization cube of LEDs". They are offering handmade 8 x 8 x 8 cubes for $3500. Video clip after the jump.
From the article: "We know these prices seem high. The finished kits involve a LOT of labor on our part. The kits reflect the cost to us to get the PCB and case made, as well as cover PIC programming and testing."
thats pretty neat, kinda pricey though :\
btw:
what excatly does "after the jump." mean, i notice this site uses that alot

its a cube of leds that does special things.
im almost tempted to make my own, but it wouldnt do anything special, itd just be a cube of leds, that was always on, but it would be way cheaper the $3500 thats for sure.

They have prettier fiberoptic Christmas trees for 50 bucks!
For $3500 the demo should have been dazzling!!!

I actually think that this is a great idea. With the right software behind it you could create some awesome effects. I may be wrong, but they could use this to create 3D led displays. Like a rotating logo or something. Although it would probably need to have higher resolutions to be recognizeable, but the concept is there.

I on the other hand do not think this is cool at all, especially for all the work required to make this thing. For three thousand five hundred dollars I can buy a UFO.

I wouldn't buy that thing unless I was as rich as Bill Gates. It's just so impractical!

I'm impressed by this artwork. The video can't show well the potentialities of the independent control of LED's. It will be interesting to see some RGB sequences to reproduce waves and 3D surfaces.
A future step may be to use led clusters and to create other solid forms (eg. prism).
