Built in 1911, 11-years after the devastating hurricane that killed some 6,000 Galveston Island residents and leveled most of the buildings on the island, room #505 apparently has the most paranormal activity. 5. Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel – Los Angeles, CA, USA

The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel is a historic hotel designed in the Spanish Colonial Revival style, located at 7000 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. Named after United States president Theodore Roosevelt and financed by a group including Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford and Louis B. Mayer, it first opened its doors on May 15, 1927. It cost $2.5 million ($33.9 million in today’s money or dollars) to complete this twelve-story building, which holds 300 rooms and suites. It is now managed by Thompson Hotels. There have been many rumors of hauntings at this hotel. Some involve celebrities, such as Marilyn Monroe, Montgomery Clift, and Errol Flynn. Others involve a little girl in a blue dress. There have also been reports of cold spots, photographic “orbs”, and mysterious phone calls to the hotel operator.

4. The Stanley Hotel – Estes Park, Colorado, USA

The Stanley Hotel is a 140-room neo-Georgian hotel in Estes Park, Colorado. Located within sight of the Rocky Mountain National Park, the Stanley offers panoramic views of the Rockies. It was built by Freelan Oscar Stanley of Stanley Steamer fame and opened on July 4, 1909, catering to the rich and famous, including the RMS Titanic survivor Margaret Brown, John Philip Sousa, Theodore Roosevelt, the Emperor and Empress of Japan, and a variety of Hollywood personalities. The hotel and its surrounding lands are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Many believe the Stanley Hotel is haunted, having reported a number of cases of ghostly activity, primarily in the ballroom. Kitchen staff have reported to have heard a party going on in the ballroom, only to find it empty. In one guest room, people claim to have seen a man standing over the bed before running into the closet. This same apparition is allegedly responsible for stealing guests’ jewelry, watches, and luggage. Others reported to have seen ghosts in their rooms in the middle of the night, simply standing in their room before disappearing.

3. 1886 Crescent Hotel – Eureka Springs, Arkansas, USA

The Crescent Hotel was built in 1886 as a resort for the rich and famous, but quickly became unmanageable and fell into disrepair. In 1908, it was reopened as the Crescent College and Conservatory for Young Women. This institution closed down in 1924, and then opened again in 1930 as a junior college. After the college closed in 1934, the Crescent was leased as a summer hotel. The Crescent Hotel has been called “America’s Most Haunted Hotel”, and is said to be haunted by at least eight spirits. In 2005, the hotel was visited by Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson, presenters of the television show Ghost Hunters. Wilson recorded a full-body apparition on their thermal imaging camera; the form seemed to be that of a man wearing a hat[5][6] and nodding his head.

Staff and guests at the Wellington Hotel have reported seeing three different ghosts – a coachman walking through the halls of the hotel, with the ghost of a little girl, as well as an old lady who has been seen walking through walls and closed doors.Room number 9 is also reported to be the most haunted part of the hotel, with a section in the information book dedicated purely to guests’ experiences in that one room.

1. Queen Mary Hotel – Long Beach, California, USA

Following Queen Mary’s permanent docking in California, the ship became a subject of haunting rumors. Since the 1980s, this supposed haunting has figured significantly into the marketing and promotion of the ship, with various attractions and tours presenting the theme for visitors. The ship was voted “one of the top 10 most haunted places in America” by Time Magazine in 2008. In particular, Cabin B340 (formerly Cabin B326, prior to the ship’s refitting after World War II) is alleged to be haunted by the spirit of a person who was murdered there, and people have reported hearing sounds of children playing in the nursery. Other reported ghosts include a young sailor who was accidentally killed in the ship’s engine room, crewmembers of the Curacoa who were killed when Queen Mary collided with her, and an unidentified “lady in white”. At least one book has been written on the subject.
