When most people think of boats, cruises and or sailing usually comes to mind, but these five examples have designs that definitely think outside the box. Whether it be a dolphin-inspired craft or a foldable boat, you’ll find them after the break.
5. Halo Intersceptor
Called the Halo Intersceptor, this Bugatti Veyron-inspired “concept car that can morph into a jet, a helicopter, or a boat; all you’ve gotta do is slip on some extra parts and poof.” You’ve got the base component — the car cockpit (or the “Intersceptor”), which the press materials describe as “a four seater USB stick that is designed to outperform any other private vehicle on earth.” It’ll go from 0 to 62 in 2.3 seconds and has a range of 700 miles.
4. Bavar 2
Called Bavar 2, this fleet of stealth flying boats from Iran come “armed with a machine gun and carries surveillance cameras, according to a report from the Iranian Student News Agency.” The delivery comes as Iran celebrates its Week of Sacred Defense, which commemorates its eight-year-long resistance to the 1980 Iraqi invasion, according to the Fars News Agency.
3. PlanetSolar Turanor
Simply put, the “MS Turanor PlanetSolar, a 31-metre long catamaran covered with 500 square metres of photovoltaic solar panels, departed Monaco on September 2010 to start a world tour to promote solar energy and to showcase a Swiss-driven product of renewable energy meant to inspire new business opportunities amongst boat builders and component manufacturers along the route.” The Swiss-designed, German-built ship is powered by over 5,380 square feet of solar paneling. The panels power two electric motors, which can reach 15 miles per hour. The panels can also soak up enough stored energy to power the boat in cloudy weather for three days. The excess energy is stored in a giant lithium-ion battery.

Called the “Boat 1”, this nifty foldable boat is made from a single sheet of polyethylene plastic and can easily be transported just about anywhere. It’s perfect for city dwellers who are fortunate enough to have a river path to work.

Powered by a 1500cc engine, the Seabreacher is a 17-foot, dolphin-shaped vessel that “can reach 50 mph on flat water, cruise beneath the surface, and launch 18 feet into the air.” It’s also got an iPod-compatible sound system and a digital periscope. Summer may never be the same.

Honorable Mention – Sealander
The Sealander is a camping trailer unlike any other, because it’s “tiny enough that it can be towed even by subcompact cars without a special permit, extra mirrors or gear, and serves as a kitchen, a tent and a boat.” The motor is also low-emissions, so you don’t have to feel bad that your idea of “getting back to nature” includes a $24,000 amphibious trailer.
