Reichel recently compiled a list of reasons on why Linux is better than Windows, and we've narrowed it down to five. Do you have any others to add? Leave us a comment with your thoughts.

Beryl: What You Can Do With Linux

Security

Linux is Open Source Software, while Windows is not. The simplest benefits of Open Source Code to demonstrate are increased security, reliability and functionality; because users of Open Source are readily able to identify and correct problems with the programs and to submit their own enhancements for incorporation into the program. Closed Source systems enjoy none of those benefits

Reliability

The architecture of Linux is superior to Windows because critical operation system functions are implemented in such a way that buggy programs can't cause the computer to become unstable and crash. In fairness, though not quite as robust as Linux, Windows 2000 and Windows XP are much improved over Windows 9x and Windows Millenium Edition

Advanced Capabilities

In addition to the system utility tools from the Unix world, Linux usually comes with the Apache Webserver, an email server, router/firewall capabilities and SQL databases. These are extras costing up to thousands of dollars on Windows. There IS free software to do these jobs on Windows, but it has mostly been adapted from Linux and loses some functionality when ported to Windows

Cost

That Linux is FREE deserves honorable mention and a bit of explanation. You can package and sell Linux for money. The competing Linux distributions all provide slightly different feature sets beyond the core system, including canned e-commerce solutions, printed manuals and phone support options

Scalability

Systems implemented under Linux can be cloned limitless times without paying additional software licensing fees - With Windows, you pay for each installation/workstation/server/cpu

Yeah, but if a user can find those bugs, how many scriptkiddiez could do the same? The biggest advantage of Linux is, that 80% of all computers run XP/Vista and therefore hackers don't mind writing Linuxviruses.

How about no crazy DRM, as in vista...?

So weak, sooooo very very weak. One of the more pathetic rants I have seen on linux vs windows argument.
4
I'd switch to Linux in a heartbeat, if it supported all the software I love and the hardware vendors made Linux drivers for the devices I use and...

Yeah, I'm not buying it. It seems to me there are only three reasons that Linux is better than Windows: Security, Reliability, and Cost. The last three reasons are the same: cost. It's free initially, it's free to get the advanced features, and it's free to set up on as many computers you want. That's all the same reason. Anyway, the second one is true enough, but then the first strikes me as not quite accurate. Don't the Microsoft programmers use Windows? And can't they make changes? Isn't that the same as Linux users making changes, though of course on a much (MUCH) smaller scale? Probably the real reason Linux is more secure is because hackers aren't writing viruses for Linux, because that's what they use, right? Why would you write a virus to attack your own system? And why would you write a virus that will affect a minority of users, if you purpose is to do a great amount of damage? So, Windows is just a big target that's it.

Not to be a party pooper, but I think the problem with everyone's Why [Insert Godly OS Here] is better than [Insert Retarded Stepchild OS Here] lists is that no one really takes into account all the facets of each OS. Everyone says that *nix is more secure than windows but no one really checks before they spew that out. If you really want a comparison here you go. Users of *nix OS's tend to be more technically adept. So, they already know enough to stay away from sources of malware. On the flip side though, *nix OS's run on most of the machines that get hacked any given day. Windows users tend to be you sweet old grandma variety and don't know much about computers, and since they don't they're more apt to trust their computer when the screen says "Click Here to hide all your personal data!" Another note about Windows reliability, 95% of the people in the world use windows and those 95% of the people will find many times more bugs than the 2-3% that use *nix. It's a numbers game, if the *nix world were the number 1 OS, we'd all be complaining about it and writing lists "Top 5 Reasons Windows is better than *nix"

Dont forget the 5 reasons why windows is better than linux: Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers!!!

Until Linux providers make it as easy to upgrade the system or applications as Apple does with the Mac, or even MS does with Windows, the averge person will blow their brains out trying to figure out the process. Then add a lousy user interface (Gnome or KDE), and it looks like WIn 3.1 or 95. Want Unix - buy a Mac. Need to run Windows apps - buy a Mac

Linux isn't better than Windows and vice versa. It depends on what you want and need. And how much control of your System you feel comfortable to give away with Windows. For me MicroSoft got a bit too nosey lately and I switched to Linux. Except for gameing I don't boot to Windows anymore.

ANYTHING is better than Windows. A rock and chisel, can on a rope, ANYTHING. What a third-rate product, and yet, because "everyone" uses it, "everyone" still buys it. Ugh.

My calculater is more advanced than windows

Interfaces on linux don't even match Vista's or Mac's. Linux's looks like garbage.

1.open source isn't that great in security. its not like your everyday user can code advanced code to prevent a hack, and usually by the time its reported, their computer has already been compromised/destroy. THe only advantage i see here is that since there are less Linux users than that of Microsoft, not many hackers will try to even make exploits of it. Just like Mac. 2. Windows Xp is made so that each process runs on its own virtual machine, so the entire computer will no longer crash if one program does. Thats why its has several operating layers such as user or kernel. 3. This argument is plain stupid. Oh wow apache lmao. I can get the wampserver package for windows which works as well as apache and requires no real setup. In fact, it even includes php 5 and mysql ready to use. Also, Apache isnt close to enough to justify for the huge amount of programs that will not run on linux. Sure, linux, like mac has some special programs, but microsoft just has an overwhelming number of programs thanks to its very useful (for consumers) monopoly. 4. Cost is not that great an issue. Most new computers now a days come with Windows XP. Besides, 100 dollars is a good price to pay for a system that is almost universal. Also, installing an operating system is something that is quite daunting for novice users. 5. You don't really need many clones of programs. Unless you have a business or something. This is the only argument i find that is positive for Linux, since it has quite some business and server use.

Who cares? Why change to something that I'm awkward at using, doesn't support the stuff I want and is more difficult to use? I admit that it is probably better than windows, I mean, what isn't? The thing is, stuff out there is made for windows, and when that changes, I will change.

it all comes down to software- I will not see a reason to switch to linux, or mac for that matter if my audio and multimedia software isn't supported- a major part of this is directx which has immense capabilities over anything that mac/linux has. I am not trying to smack linux though, I use it at work and at some point want to wrangle a box at home for it (I don't reboot often enough to really want a dual boot system) but right now linux is extremely utilitarian- you want to set up a webserver, rock on- you want to surf the internet- it is almost as good as mac/pc (flash and some javascript is still not supported) watching movies is alright on it- but most eveything else that I do on my box at home leaves linux in the stonee age right now- not to say that that is permanent- but that is how it is as I write this

I don't think linux is BETTER than windows. I would say linux give's you alot more control of your system. But to be able to control your linux pc efficiently you need to learn alot. Windows is easy, poeples are lazy and learning linux is assly! Simple equation. Each system has its advantage: If you want to play latest games you better have Windows on your PC. If you want the real control of your PC, Windows and Macs just cant rivals the liberty Linux offer you!!! They're al good. Gamers got Windows, Graphists got Macs and Hack.. eh Enthusiast got Linux! And for David: You are so ignorant lol "linux interface?" Maybe KDE or Gnome? I will just say that themes on desktop linux rules! Alot more beautiful then Windows or Macs. Go search for Beryl you'll see how Vista is ordinary...
