6-Pound Gold Nugget California

Officially called the 6.07-pound “Butte Nugget,” this fine specimen is believed to be the largest gold chunk dug up in Gold Rush country in modern times. This giant nugget sold over the weekend for a whopping $400,000, to “a prominent Bay Area collector.” What most may not know is that if it were melted down as ordinary gold, the nugget might’ve been worth only $85,000 or so, but its connection to the historic Gold Country is what drove the price way up. “Nuggets like this don’t come along every day. I really didn’t believe that I would see a California nugget of this size unearthed during my lifetime,” said David McCarthy, the nugget’s appraiser.
