You've seen why it's better than Windows, now check out seven reason on why you should switch to Linux -- courtesy of TUX. Continue reading to see them all.

Beryl Linux Touchscreen

1. It Doesn't Crash

Linux has proved to be so reliable and secure that it is commonly found in dedicated firewall and router systems used by high-profile companies to secure their networks. For more than ten years, it has not been uncommon for Linux systems to run for months or years without needing a single reboot

2. Viruses Are Few and Far Between

Although it is possible to create a virus to target Linux systems, the design of the system itself makes it very difficult to become infected. A single user could cause local damage to his or her files by running a virus on his or her system; however, this would be an isolated instance rather than something could spread out of control

3. Freedom of Choice

Linux offers freedom of choice as far as which manufacturer you purchase the software from as well as which application programs you wish to use. Being able to pick the manufacturer means you have a real choice as far as type of support you receive. Being open-source software, new manufacturers can enter the market to address customer needs

4. Applications, Applications, Applications

Each Linux distribution comes with hundreds and possibly thousands of application programs included. This alone can save you thousands of dollars for each desktop system you configure. Although this is a very small subset, consider that the OpenOffice.org office suite is included as well as the GIMP, a program similar to (and many people say more capable than Adobe Photoshop); Scribus, a document layout program similar to Quark Xpress; Evolution, an e-mail system equivalent to Microsoft's Outlook Express; and hundreds more

5. Virtually Hardware-Independent

Linux was designed and written to be easily portable to different hardware. For the desktop user, this means that Linux has been and likely always will be the first operating system to take advantage of advances in hardware technology such as AMD's 64-bit processor chips

6. Interoperability

More and more computers are being connected to networks. No system would be complete if it did not include tools to allow it to interoperate with computers running other operating systems. Once again, Linux is very strong in this area

7. Standards

Linux itself and many common applications follow open standards. This means an update on one system will not make other systems obsolete

I would switch to Linux just for Beryl, like in that touchscreen video
2
Can anybody recommend a particular Linux distribution? I'm quite interested in getting one, but unsure what one to get. I only need a simple, easy to use one. Thanks
3
JammieD get Ubuntu, it's the most user friendly Linux distribution right now.
4
I'd switch to Linux if there where proper games for it and my 3D hardware would work.
5
I personally like ubuntu :) give it a try :)
6
I recommend, Ubuntu (Gnome), kubuntu (KDE) or xubuntu (XFCE). They all are easy to install, easy to maintain and easy to work with. or go to http://distrowatch.com/ there you can find a lot of information about Linux distributions.
7
@JammieD: At the moment Ubuntu is everyone's favourite Distribution, so it is probably a good idea to start with it. Other Distributions that may be good for newcomers are SimplyMEPIS and PCLinuxOS, altough I haven't tried those two.

Ubuntu is a great distribution of linux. Download and burn the cd and pop it in your computer and boot from. It runs as a live version so you can check it out before installing it. http://www.ubuntu.com/ and http://www.ubuntuforums.org for all the help you need PS - I have Beryl running perfectly on my Ubuntu install :)

JammieD, try Ubuntu.

I use Ubuntu, and I couldn't imagine using Windows again.

Check out ubuntu. I've tried Fedora core 5 and FC 6, but Ubuntu was much easier to set up and get everything running.

my problem is 4. Applications, Applications, Applications only true if you only use your computer for run of the mill operations- in the world of audio production and performance there is currently 1 tool that is nowhere near usable for live performance and is only tolerable for recording. As well it doesn't take your custom vst plugs like both mac and pc. video production and 3d is crippled as well. also compatibility bugs me. I work on linux, (solarwinds)unix and pc at work- compatibility of things like ascii text and terminal pathing can end up a pain after a while, you get really sick of translating things all of the time. I love the way that all of the unix heads at work blame the pc for not adhering to linux standards in this when the fact of the matter it is it is the other way around.

Ok, Thanks a lot everyone. I shall start downloading :D

I tried to install Linux on my desktop PC. It was a nightmare. After trying and failing to install two popular distributions, the third finally did the trick. Except that I couldn't get some hardware to function, including my network adapter. Plus, there's no iTunes on Linux It was a total wash. I'm sticking with Windows XP. I don't have time to screw around with text commands and hardware drivers.

1. Lol large business servers usually dont do much more than process usual server requests. Its not like if you will play video games on a high profile company server. Its easy for any Windows server to do the same thing. 2. Viruses usually spread by attaching to emails or through peer to peer networks. Linux would not cause much hinderance to a viruse's propaganation. 3. Windows XP has way too many problems to provide a problem of choice for consumers. There are just simply so many programs out there for windows that it would be hard to not find one of choice. 4. Most of the listed programs up there can be downloaded for windows in under an hour on decent broadband. Also, Windows XP comes with most of the programs you will need. This is much more pronounced in Professional which comes with the Microsoft Office suite. Besides ,there are thousands of free programs available that run on windows. 5. That is true, but it is also true that hardware manufacturers rarely make things that are not compatible with Windows. It is just not economically profitable for them. And if something does, there is often a WIndows update available within a few weeks to support it. Also, there are quite alot of high performance drivers that fail to run correctly on Linux. 6. There are loads of free programs available for Windows to connect to networks. Filezilla or Wamp, for example. 7. Lol, Windows IS standard for most software manufacturers. Most high end applications run on MAC, otherwise they usually run on Windows. --- Windows is better.
