747-400F Gets Airborne Laser System

Thanks to an Airborne Laser system by Lockheed Martin, modified 747-400F's are now equipped to take out enemy missles. This system consists of a "High Energy Laser", "Flight Turret Assembly", "Tracker Illuminator lasers", and a "Beacon Illuminator". We may soon see this technology on other aircraft such as the B2 Stealth Bomber. More pics after the jump.
"As it may sound impressive it has it's drawbacks too an ICBM is fired usually thousands of miles away from enemy soil so the 747 has to be flying over enemy airspace with constant threat of anti air missiles and enemy fighters as it is the 747 is a passenger jet with limited manuvarability. "

This is awesome, as an avid pilot I would like to commend the scientists involved in the developement and production of this wonderful device. I can't believe that anyone would want to shoot down a bunch of innocent bystanders, but obviously there are people out there that will do anything to hurt those they don't know. Maybe it is easier that way.

It finally came, another reason to higher federal taxes, we dont nessesarly need them for iraq, but for north korea, well definately safe, the only problem is th elazer cant shoot out planes, which is a huge disadvantage because youd need escort jets

the idea is old, been around for decades, but just recently (within the past 5 years) have these things been able to be tested, as known, lasers are used for lots of things, but to finally get something that works at a distance that implies enough heat to destroy a missile is a great jump, and an awsome invention! i want one...

It is not for passenger aircraft. It is a chemical laser and requires a plane that big to house the equipment. If you can shoot down missiles in the boost phase, it has potential for more uses. That is allthe engineers told me. ;)

I wonder why they put it in a 747 instead of something more military. They got bigger jets than a 747 dont they? Dont they have bigger and more maneuverable jets?

they put it in a 747 for budget reasons... nothing more, nothing less. 'word on the street' is they are developing a military aircraft to house this system, due to sucessful, and ongoing research.

I cant see this working well.. they would have to know ICBM's are gonna be launched.. to be in the area.. or have these 747's in constant operation with Fighter Escorts. The enemy would then take them out by numerical strength and then press the button. Or how would it work? Anyone?

It seems obvious that the intent is to arm Air Force 1 with it as to further protect it from missles and not strictly for budget reasons.

"Dont they have bigger and more maneuverable jets?" The point is that with this equiped you wont -need- to maneuver. If something is coming at you you can simply shoot it down and avoid the often risky evasive maneuvers.
