A Look Back: Snakebots

Professor Howie Choset of Carnegie Mellon University's Robotics Institute developed several snake-like robots -- equipped with cameras and sensors -- for security/surveillance purposes. Video after the jump.
The use of beveled gears around their circumference, allows the serpentine robots many more degrees of movement than conventional robots—including the ability to move efficiently in three-dimensional space
