This has to be speed up, we don't even see the pieces fall down, they just appear at the bottom BANG!... and I don't think its because of the video compression.
Still the guy looks good.

It appears to me that the video is not speeded up. Just look what's written down: "Death Mode". Scary =)

He's playing in death mode, which means the pieces just appear at the center of the screen setting on top of the highest piece. You have very little time to put the piece where it needs to be before it locks into place.

Its not speeded up, the player is making them drop faster. That's some crazy fast reaction time.

Apparently none of you have ever played tetris before, but when you get that high of a level you dont watch them fall any more they just appear at the bottom. No affense but I could of easily done what he did...maybe better actually

Insane Tetris Skill
You’ve always thought you were great at Tetris? Perhaps you haven’t seen this video of the champion at the Tetris Japan Finals 2001. Can you do that?

It is and at the same time, it isn't sped-up. The video is real-time, and having played Tetris Grand Master 1 (While TGM2 has Death Mode available from the get-go, TGM1 requires a button code to play the aformentioned mode), I can assure everyone that it's not as easy as it looks. The pieces aren't as flexible when they hit the ground, as in Tetris DS and Tetris Worlds. Plus to make the game harder, you can't just hold the direction to make the piece go all the way to the side, you have to keep nudging the stick.
Brutal game.
