Microsoft officially released Windows 95 to the public on August 24th, 1995. This “graphical user interface-based” OS combined the functions of MS-DOS and previous Windows versions into one product. Changes included “support for 255-character mixed-case long filenames and preemptively multitasked protected-mode 32-bit applications.” Videos after the jump.

Windows 95 brought much greater power and usability to the desktop GUI, but on the bad side, it also stifled competition in the DOS compatible operating system market. In the marketplace, Windows 95 was an unqualified success, and within a year or two of its release had become the most successful operating system ever produced
