Aerogel - NASA's Toy

Finally, you can buy the world's lightest known solid. What are we talking about? Aerogel, it's chemically similar to glass, yet ultra strong structurally, and has a melting point of 2,200 degrees F (1,200 degrees C). With a density of just 3 milligrams per cubic centimeter, it weighs only three times that of air. It's been used in the Mars Pathfinder Rover to shield components from the extreme temperatures found on Mars. The text says it melts at 2200F and the pic says it can take a 3000F blowtorch just fine. This is a hoax.

If you need verification check out http://stardust.jpl.nasa.gov/tech/aerogel.html At least some of their info seems to be accurate.

This stuff is no hoax. They had a sample of it on tech tv a while back. (The screen savers to be exact)

Aerogell may be real, but i wouldn't trust that site. They also sell a radiometer which supposedly runs on convection currents in a vacuum. (radiometers are actually driven by thermal transpiration)

this stuff sucks. i got a sample of it and put it in my oven at 100C and it melted.

yeah this stuff is legit. they talked about it recently on Kevin Rose's internet talk shot Diggnation. It was also in an episode of The Screen Savers as well.

I worked at NASA/ JSC in Houston, TX from 1988 - 1998 and I actually saw and held this stuff in my hand. It is no hoax.
