Aerion AS2

H/T: Mail Online

Unlike other business jets, the $120-million Airbus Aerion AS2 is the world’s first private supersonic jet, enabling passengers to travel between London and New York in just three hours, or from Los Angeles to Tokyo in a mere six. It has a top speed of 1,217 mph (Mach 1.5), which is a hair under the Concorde’s 1,350 mph, using supersonic laminar flow technology. The carbon fiber wing design will allow for lighter fuel consumption and increased travel ranges by reducing aerodynamic drag by 20%. The cabin is designed to accommodate up to 12 passengers. “Billionaire Bass has been open about his personal mission to offer the first business jet to fly faster than the speed of sound, a project begun in 2002. Dubbed the ‘Son of Concorde, AS2 will fly at lower speeds over land because of flight restrictions related to sonic booms. The US forbids civilian planes from reaching the sound barrier – about 750 mph (1,200 km/h) – while flying overland due to noisy sonic booms. But over Europe the AS2 can fly at supersonic speeds without detection,” according to Mail Online.
