Ocean Abyss Table

Influenced by the beauty of New Zealand’s landscapes, artist Ben Young takes layers of glass, laminates them in a bluish tone, and then layers them onto concrete. Each piece in his “Ocean Abyss” series are hand drawn, hand cut and handcrafted. The most difficult steps are the planning and development phases, where models are constructed, templates drawn, and custom jigs created, before hand-cutting the sheets with a glazier’s tool. “I work with 2D shapes and have to figure out how to translate that into a 3D finished piece. Sometimes my starting point changes dramatically as I have to find a way to layer the glass to create certain shapes,” said Young. Continue reading for more pictures and information.
