As one of the headline games of the new platform, it's no surprise that Minecraft is getting a little official love - today, it takes the form of a truly sweet looking Minecraft-themed Xperia Play. It's being sold by Mojang themselves, so you know it's for real.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, better known as the PSP Phone or PlayStation Phone, has produced a lot of chatter on the internet, and rightfully so. Featuring a zippy 1-GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon processor, 400MB of RAM, 5.0-megapixel camera, and a crisp 854 x 480 display. Continue reading for the videos. Click here for more pictures. So with almost no differentiating software of its own, the Play is really relying on the strength of its gamepad to round up willing participants in its gaming revolution. We concur that that's indeed the phone's main strength, with good ergonomics and an extremely durable sliding mechanism.

After dozens of leaks and spy shots, Sony has officially confirmed the Xperia Play with these official pictures along with a batch of videos. Just to recap, it features a 1.0-GHz Snapdragon processor, Google Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and Qualcomm Adreno 205 graphics. It's set for release on the Verizon Wireless network this spring. The phone comes preloaded with a "legendary" PSone game of the undisclosed variety, as well as a bevy of popular Android games including Asphalt 6, The Sims 3 and Tetris, and Sony Ericsson promises a library of 50 additional titles available at launch from 20 publishing partners.

Coming soon to a cell phone distributor near you, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is poised to battle Google's Nexus S and Apple's iPhone, at least in the mobile gaming arena. Well, having touched the actual gamepad on an Xperia Play, we'd be lying if we say we're not further tempted by it.
