NASA Hubble Space Telescope Star Trek USS Enterprise Galaxy
Photo credit: European Space Agency (ESA)
NASA/ESA’s Hubble Space Telescope used both its Advanced Camera for Surveys and Wide Field Camera 3 to capture a group of three galaxies, collectively known as NGC 7764A, that resembles Star Trek’s USS Enterprise starship. At first glance, it appears as if the two galaxies in the upper right of the image are interacting with one another, while their long trails of stars and gas extending make it seem like they’ve been struck at great speed.

William Shatner Star Trek Blue Origin Space Rocket
William Shatner, best known for playing Captain James T. Kirk on “Star Trek: The Original Series,” has successfully completed a trip to the edge of space aboard Blue Origin’s NS-18 New Shepard rocket. The reusable rocket and capsule lifted off from Blue Origin Launch Site One, located north of the West Texas town of Van Horn, at approximately 9:50 a.m. local time. The ride vehicle completed an 11-minute flight, four of which let the crew experience weightlessness in outer space, before returning to land.

Magnavision LaserDisc Player Leonard Nimoy
Leonard Nimoy may be best known for his portrayal of Spock, the half-human, half-Vulcan character on “Star Trek” starting from the very first TV episode, in 1966, to the film Star Trek Into Darkness in 2013, but those around in 1981 may have seen him showcasing the latest technology at the time. The actor demonstrated the gigantic Magnavision VH-8000 LaserDisc Player, which employed gas helium–neon laser tubes to read discs and had a red-orange light with a wavelength of 628 nm.

Space Force Logo
President Donald Trump’s officially unveiled the US military’s Space Force logo today, and social media was quick to point out that it looked eerily similar to an emblem from a famous science-fiction franchise, Star Trek. However, it’s been in use for quite some time, starting with the US Army Air Forces. Space Force is now the sixth branch of the military, joining the Air Force, Marine Corps, Army, Navy, and Coast Guard. Read more for a video and additional information.

Nanox Arc X-Ray Machine Star Trek
Israel-based Nanox created an X-ray machine that appears to be straight from the Star Trek universe, and it’s called the ARC. The company aims to make low-cost medical scanning available to people around the world with a much smaller footprint than current machines. This means ditching the expensive CT machines in favor of a portable bed. Read more for a video and additional information.

Star Trek Picard
Patrick Stewart introduced the first trailer for Star Trek: Picard at San Diego Comic-Con today, and fans attending were able to preview the series before the internet. The trailer opens with Picard in the vineyard where he opens some doors and looks at his old belongings. We find out that Data sacrificed his life for Picard. “I wanted to belong here, but it never felt like home,” said Picard. Read more for the video and additional information.

NASA Mars Star Trek
Scientists who sifted through photos shot by NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) were surprised to discover a dune on the surface of the Red Planet that looks oddly familiar. No, this isn’t a Photoshop job, but rather a real formation that looks like Star Trek’s ‘Starfleet logo’. Unfortunately (or fortunately), this doesn’t provide enough evidence to conclude that Captain Philippa Georgiou and Commander Michael Burnham from the Star Trek: Discovery pilot actually visited the planet.
