Cricket-Controlled Pac Man Video

One of our readers just sent in this video of "Cricket-Controlled Pac Man" in action. Just to recap -- in this game, players "can play Pacman against real crickets," which replace the standard "ghosts". Video demonstration after the jump.
The computer game we used for our experiment is "Pac-Man" (Namco, 1980). Instead of computer code, we want to have animals controlling the ghosts. To enable this, we built a real maze for the animals to walk around in, with its proportions and layout matching the maze of the computer game. The position of the animals in the maze is detected using colour-tracking via a camera, and linked to the ghosts in the game

This is cool, but the crickets didn't seem to give the player much of a challenge. And they need to make the walls higher because some of the crickets were on top of them. What if pac man was represented as a peice of sugar on a robotic arm that hovers above the maze? Then the crickets might have more motivation to stop pac man. Or you could play against mice and use cheese! I'm excited about new technology that will let us play videogames with pets.
