Modular Prosthetic Limb

The Modular Prosthetic Limb, designed by the John Hopkins University’s Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL) and funded by the US Department of Defense’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), is basically a mind-controlled bionic arm that can touch and feel. That’s right, scientists developed microelectrode arrays that connect brain cells to electronic circuitry – square grids measure just 16-square-millimeters large with 96 points that penetrate the brain’s surface by about 1/16th of an inch. In other words, it uses a brain-machine interface that converts brain signals to computer signals. Future upgrades include embedding sensors into the prosthetic so that patients could tell the differences between temperatures and / or textures.
