Virtual Reality Tennis Ball
Disney engineers have recently unveiled a system that enables users to accurately catch a real ball while immersed in a virtual reality environment, paving the way for future applications. It consists of three visualizations: rendering a matching virtual ball, the predicted trajectory of the ball, and a target catching point lying on the predicted trajectory.

They track the projectile motion of a ball as it is being tossed, and use Unscented Kalman Filtering to generate predictive estimates of its motion. The predictive assistance visualizations developed by the engineers effectively increases the user’s senses, but can also alter the user’s strategy in catching.
