Kevlar is what the Army has been using in body armor for decades, but spider silk may be change that. Michigan-based bioengineering company Kraig Biocraft has genetically altered silkworms to produce spider silk, and calls it “Dragon Silk”. They recently won a contract with the US Army to use this material in body armor. Simply put as possible, Kraig Biocraft inserted the genes for making spider silk into silkworms, thus creating a composite silk strong as normal spider silk yet much easier to produce.
