Engineers Sean McCarthy and Richard Walshe claim to have "found a way of producing free, clean and limitless energy out of thin air." Videos after the jump.
In Steorn's theory, fixed magnets could act upon a moving magnet in such a way as to make it a virtual perpetual motion generator. In an electrical appliance - a computer, kettle, mobile phone or toy - that would provide all the power for its lifetime. Of course, free-energy cars, power plants and water-pumping systems could follow. A better world indeed

I'm very sure if & when, if ever we get to a point that there is "Free Energy" everywhere to power our Cars, Factories, Homes, Computers, Dildo's or whatever someone is going to come along and find out a "New & Fantastic Way to Charge us more for it that we were paying for what "WE" already had"...

Yet another crackpot. How many people have the suckered out of their money so far? How many more will fall for their trickery?
3
Its always amusing that these nutjobs go full bore into 'more energy out than in' when getting to 99% efficient would be far more plausable and equally big news.
4
Yea right, by violating the laws of Thermodynamics
5
now if this is true that would be the best thing to be invented after the wheel. but 1st lets see the test. and its probably a machine that makes energy from 0.002Watt to 0.0025Watt. ;)

i'm always amused by these internet smartasses, who claim such inventions are a hoax or 'impossible' in a blink of an eye, knowing jack shit about science. I'm not a scientist, i don't know how to create a device which produces more energy than it consumes, but at least i'm not PRETENDING to be smarter than actual scientists. if you were so smart, then you would shut the hell up and try to understand the nature of that kind of inventions. I don't know if this particular invention works or not, but I hope someday somebody comes up with a device like that just to shut these non-competent assholes bragging of 'ooooooohh, it's sooooo not possible, i know one rule of thermodynamics'. cheers.

It always amazes me when the 'Scientific Community' responds to these sorts of claims with venom and hatred. I thought science was based on measuring things? But science is becoming more like religion every day. Too many egos and too little altruistic intent. There have been hoaxes before but we owe it to ourselves to check everything. There is much more to learn about the universe and how it works, surely we cant be THAT arrogant to believe we already know it all! Laws of physics are only laws until they are broken, just because you don’t know how doesn’t mean it can’t be done. Remember though, the power is where the funding is...

There's one of these claims every year, you simply can't break the laws of thermodynamics!
9
Who said that the laws of thermodynamics are absolute fact? They were created by humans and humans are never perfect.

This old technology that is being rediscovered. A similar technology has been patented in America in 1979 and supposedly Tesla came up with the same thing in the 1930s. Check out the following: http://www.newebmasters.com/freeenergy/index.shtml http://www.keelynet.com/energy/teslafe1.htm

Seem like most people are either amused or amazed by this invention, judging by their comments. I think this is impossible and don't believe in free energy or pepetual motion. Would love for me to be wrong though.

Well, I'm gonna give em a chance. The jury of 12 is going to get picked before the end of the year with the 12 scientists doing a series of testing in the beginning of 2007. I'll be watching this really closely. :|

The gov't loves to buy these ideas up and destroy them, leaving the oil companies on top. Its a sad sad thing really.

This is exactly the kind of thing that scares the crap out of me. Let's say this invention legit. Overnight, the oil companies will be out of business. All refinery workers, rig workers, etc. will be out of a job. The next day, oil stock will plung - probably taking the whole stock market with it. Gas stations will go belly up. All the people that sell things to all these workers will be immediatly effected. Next will be electrical companies and all the supporting infrastructure and supporting jobs because everyone can have a free generator for their own homes. Then we have the auto industry who'll have to make a right-turn on all their gas-powered cars. They could recover, but who would they sell their new cars to when everyone is out of a job. That would just be the start. As much as I really, really want free engergy to solver all our problems, if not released in a responsible fashion we'd all be in a world of hurt almost overnight. I've had dreams of free engery myself on many occasions, but the question of how to release such an invention plagues me almost as much as how to create such a thing. Just a thought...

"i’m always amused by these internet smartasses, who claim such inventions are a hoax or ‘impossible’ in a blink of an eye, knowing jack shit about science. I’m not a scientist" I am. And this is a hoax. UK-Student is right. Like poster below there one of these every year. There are LOTS of patents for free-energy and perpetual motion machines. So I'll explain: You can get a patent for a device that does not or 'almost' works. A patent is just a claim to a design or function. It has nothing to do with performance.
17
i bet it's a publicity stunt for their company
18
they might have actually just built a device that sucks the energy out of the magnets creating the illusion of free energy.

I love who quick people are to comment on such a subject, with no real idea what they are talking about, to the 1-3 of you, who do have some knowledge in this area, good for you! To the rest, well, lets just leave it with how upset you are feeling reading this.

This would be amazing if it is true. However, there would be no massive failure of the oil driven economy of the world. It takes time and money to integrate new technology into established practices. While a drop in prices would be expected, it would not cause this: "Overnight, the oil companies will be out of business. All refinery workers, rig workers, etc. will be out of a job. The next day, oil stock will plung"

[...] Personally, my optimistic curious mind believes there is a solution for free energy, but then again, I think when it’s discovered, all hell will break loose. Anyhoots, check out the brief videos and form your own opinions… As far as I know, we could have had cars fueled by water many years ago, but freaking patents, politics, and oil tycoons own these great inventions, hence they will squeeze every penny they can before letting us all have it.via Techeblog [...]

I'll agree with drew, But on a side note we do need to study particalthermaldynamics better. This doesn't really have anything to do with physics when subatomic particals are being harnessed... Stupid news reporters.
23
The government is probably going to trash that thing up
24
In 'science', you can never 'prove' something, only disprove it. Mathematics is the logic of 'proof, whereas Science is the opposite. What we refer to as 'laws of thermodynamics', are only posits that, so far under our most intense scrutiny, have failed to be disproven. As our stalwark, Einstein's theory of relativity, it has so far held up to intense scrutiny, as have Newton's laws. Throughout science history many a fact has been turned on its head and disproven, destroying vested careers in what was once an 'key' piece of scientific thought. Remember, it only takes one mistake to point to all the others and show how wrong the previous train of thought really can be.
25
they might have actually just built a device that sucks the energy out of the magnets creating the illusion of free energy. That was actually my first thought. So far, every remotely plausible attempt at free energy I've seen is not literally generating energy from nothing, but rather attempting to harness an otherwise unusable form of energy like cosmic or background radiation. (Whether this is feasible with any level of technology is left as an exercise for the reader's ancestors.) Turning the magnetism into electricity would be much the same. The problem with free energy is that, once it's understood, it's no longer "free". In a lot of ways you could consider nuclear power free energy: you have these funny rocks, you put them together and voila water boils! Sort of like having these funny rocks that metal likes to stick to, you move them just so and voila electricity!
