Fire doesn’t necessarily have to be attached to destruction, as these geeky examples will prove. Highlights include the “Fire-Starter” Flashlight, Fire-Fighting Robot, and more.

Infernoptix

Put simply, the 96-inch Infernoptix Digital Pyrotechnic Matrix is one of the coolest visual displays we’ve seen. It uses custom software “to create scrolling text, simple animations, freehand sketching (via mouse), and an audio level meter” in a 12 x 7 array.

There’s even a percussion mode, which takes advantage of the concussive nature of each burst to allow scripting and playback of complex rhythms.

“Fire Starter” Flashlight

This modder built “a very high powered flashlight, capable of lighting things on fire, roasting marshmallows, or blinding your would-be attacker.”

This is a 12V bulb which is being overdriven to 14+V, to about 140 watts, with an estimated light output of about 4000 lumens. Compare that to a regular 2D MagLight, which is much, much less than 50 lumens

Fire-Fighting Robot

“MSOE” is a fully autonomous robot that comes equipped with a fan to put out small fires. In the video, you’ll see “MSOE” navigate through a maze, eventually locating a candle and putting out its flame.
