Feature: Robotic Hands That Mimic Human Movement with Air Muscles

Robotic hands have come a long way, in terms of human-like movement. New models by the Shadow Robot Company and Japanese researchers make use of air muscles for realistic motion. Continue reading to see more. Click here for first picture in gallery.

Shadow's Robot Hand

Shadow's impressive robot hand uses air muscles -- a container of 40 more specifically -- to provide fluid, human-like movement. This technology allows direct mapping from a human to the robot. It contracts by up to 40% when actuated with a supply of compressed air.

Researchers at Japan's Ishikawa Namiki Komuro Labs have perfected grasping using high-speed visual feedback. The system consists of an SPE-256 parallel processing vision unit which is controlled in real-time, when parallel sensory feedback is realized.
