Jim Skeldon gives us a tour of Dell's first retail store, located inside Northpark Mall (Dallas). This store is "aimed at consumers who want to shop for and buy computers, and related products and services for home use." Video after the jump.
The store allows customers to speak to Dell representatives who can answer questions and guide them to a particular product(s) based on how they plan to use it

Every time Dell does anything apple people try to say they are being ripped off. *yawn* Yes, a retail store is such a rip off -- Apple thought of having a retail store first. C'mon guys...you can't be serious. Why not point out the fact that you can configure a computer on the Apple store. Thats a Dell rip off. Dell was first to do that. Dell has had Kiosk's across the country in shopping malls for years now. All they are doing is instead of showcasing a few products they have -- they are showcasing all of them in a store. Grow up Apple guys. Your whining is getting old.

This is definitely not an Apple store rip-off.  It's more of a strange attempt to follow in Gateway's failed footsteps.  If it *was* a rip-off of Apple, it would have a far better chance of breaking even. I just can't fathom the kind of brain-dead decision making that says "let's open a store where you can't take anything home!" -jcr

Funniest thing to me is that Dell has such a lame idea that they cant even see that they have failed before they even started. Dell needs to make a concerted effort to focus and stay with their sales model of catering to businesses and not the average consumer. They are being distracted, ( As are most Apple-wanna-bes currently) by Apple's huge success in both retail and MP3 player. The lesson that Dell will learn here is that they are a company that is losing more and more market share because they failed to inovate and be more about the future instead of living in the past. I live to see the day where Dell closes and the founder is forced to eat his words, "The day Apple makes more money than us is the day I give al of our investers their money back." And I dont make that up, the moron actually said it several years ago. Well guess what? As of Q4 last year Apple in fact DID pass Dell in net worth. Funny how things change. (Waves goodbye to Dell.) This Dell store is the beginning of the end for Dell. They are too concerned with chasing Apple than with inovating and moving forward. Much like Microsuck and the Zune. They can never beat Apple at its own game. Apple IS whats its all about now. The commercials are copied by HP, the stores copied b Dell, and their MP3 players copied by MS. Must feel good to be on top. Steve Jobs is a god. He deserves all of Apple's success right now.

The point of not walking away with a computer right then and there is because at that Dell Store (or Kiosk) YOU configured YOUR computer personally for YOURSELF! Instead of having to pick from clones of configurations picked out from a company, you can configure the whole system, built just for you. And you can even see the system before you buy it, which seems mainly why Dell is moving from only business, to business and kiosk, to lastly business, kiosk, and in store. Dell is innovating in that they are moving ahead, along with the company. They are not following in Gateways' steps (Gateways' stores were mainly put in low budget mini malls, which is why they nose-dived), or Apples' steps (having to choose a system at the store and lug it home). Dell is being innovative by beginning to place Dell Stores in higher-end locations, and yet the consumer can still see the computer/TV/peripheral they wish to buy ahead of time, then have it delivered straight to their doorstep instead of fitting it into their car and carrying it inside. Also, I see Dell as being extremely innovative because they seem to be moving ahead with the in store idea very slowly; build one store, see what happens, build another one, etc. Seems like a smart company with many, many smart leaders to me.
