First Look: Portal

Kotaku provides us with a first look at Valve's upcoming Portal game. Gameplay demonstration after the jump.
"It looks like they took the portal concept from Prey and slapped it on a gun--you can shoot them into walls and floors to solve all kinds of crazy puzzles, teleporting objects around and stuff. Looks like a total mindbender." GameSpy is reporting that Portal is being designed as a single player game in the Half-Life universe and will ship will Half-Life 2: Episode 2.

4
looks amazing, can't wait for it to come out!
5
That's just awesome, although Prey was first with the portal idea
6
It is obvious that they took the portal idea from Prey, but they redeem themselves by using it in a way cooler way. Those puzzles look like they would be frustratingly fun! It's the Grav gun's and Prey's love child!

The funniest thing about this game is that it seems to be influenced by some award winning college students' project called Narbacular Drop. You can download a demo of the project at http://www.digipen.edu/GameGallery/downloads/NarbacularDrop.exe and it gives you a pretty good idea of how the portal concept works. I wonder if the two are somehow related.

Fn awesome, intriguing concept cant wait for Half Life 2: Episode 2.
9
Hmmm... Pretty interesting... I can see the *Puzzles* in future games getting very very complicated but the Game play would be interesting....

Better than Prey? I don't want another hitch hiker on the road to the portal.

Everyone loves tech demos. Is it just me or did the Source engine get a facelift? BTW, go buy Prey for a precursor to this, seeing as that's where Valve got the technology.

This was neither stolen from, or used ideas from Prey... as Prey was not the first to do it. The public concept for Narbacular Drop was around before Prey was announced... If anything Prey took that idea, and aplied it to stationary portals in itself. Portal is being made by the same guys that made Narbacular Drop! So its their idea, and not Prey's. Portal gives players the ability to control where the portals are, which is far better!

it's ok, all of this is stolen from Id's Doom anyway,*sarcasm* ;-p who cares, it looks fun.
