We don't have much information on this technology, but from the video clip (sent in by one of our readers), it looks as if built-in infrared sensors identify the person or object and conform to their shape when opening. Watch after the jump.
(Thanks, Brian)
Obviously its not perfect yet, but I see this as the future of many personal doors.

I don't really see a practical use for this. Just open the door all the way, Why would you part of it open?

I don't see the immediate value in having doors like this. Where is the increased efficiency? Lower cost? A more refined version would be cool for sure, but I don't see this as being the future of small doors.

Agreed. Pretty cool, still needs a lot of work.

I dont think it'll open in time if I run and bust through it. I'd love to do that right in front of the designer, and watch him cry.

I would not use this as the main door in the house like the japanese add sugests... But indoors would be really sweet... Use something like this door to separate living rooms or the dining room from the kitchen would look really cool... I just think about a party... How this door reacts with a lot of people trying to go trough it at the same time? Imagina a huge fire and everybody burning inside waiting for their turn to go...

If you listen to the commentary on the video, they think the main application is for places that want to control dust and air, for expample, microchip factories and hospitals.

it would be funny to put a piece of tape over one of the sensors at face level and see someone get whacked by that part of the "door"
