Micah Ernst, 23, battled it out at the Verizon FiOS Grand Tournament (6000 participants) on Monday and took home the $100,000 grand prize -- playing Half-Life 2: Deathmatch. He plans to "pay off his student loans, buy a big-ass TV and make a trip to New Zealand" with his winnings.
"We congratulate Micah on his impressive win," said Brian Angiolet, director of Marketing for Verizon. "It was exciting to see him and the other finalists compete live against each other, using a 30 Megabit-per-second FiOS Internet connection delivered over our new, all-fiber network"

Well done, Micah! That was an awsome huge sum of prize money. Cool..... just, by playing Half-Life 2.

What a sad world it is when someone can make money for playing a game.

Gaming is more than $7Billion for the software alone, and people think it's a sad world? Wake and smell the roses, since the X games used to be thought of as ridiculous, what makes computer gaming any less significant? A sad world is for those who don't have an open mind to the possibilities that anything can happen.

"What a sad world it is when someone can make money for playing a game." You mean like football or baseball?

looks like good promotion for Verizon's new internet access, even when considering that HL2:DM isn't exactly popular amongst hardcore gamers.

Your right, It's a sad day when someone can make money playing a game. We should shut down soccer, football, baseball, hockey, and any other sports GAME.

It's sad that someone, or anyone thinks that is sad. I have the privilege of every once in while shooting it out with one of the finalists from that tourney. As much as I do like field sports and played them, I think there is a place for PC gamers and others to earn some cash. There is a considerable consumption of time and concentration involved. Oh! and I beleive that "hardcore" gamers do appreciate HL2.

Ok, first off, you wanna try playing like a guy that could win a tournament like that? I'm an experienced Counterstrike: Source and HLDM2 player and I can say from experience that those games take A LOT more skill than most people here are giving them credit for, so, before you run your mouth, go buy the game, go online, get owned and then come back and post. Thanks.
