Living Church

At first glance, it looks like a garden, but get closer, and you’ll see it’s a living church in New Zealand. Created by Brian Cox in his very own backyard over 4-years, a variety of trees were selected, including some with stone-colored trunks, while, others, with sparse foliage, to ensure that his church will always be illuminated by sunlight. How could he afford such a project? No, he’s not a billionaire, but rather his gardening company Treelocations specializes in replanting whole, live trees using enormous mechanized spades. Cox said: “I walked out my back door one day and thought, ‘That space needs a church’ – and so it began. I cleared the area in April 2011 and made the iron frame, drawing on all the research I had done over the years of studying churches.”
