Located in China’s Heilongjiang province, Harbin is not usually a place you’d expect to see a cutting-edge structure, much less one designed for large crowds, that is unless…you’re talking about the Harbin Opera House by MAD Architects. It “would blend into the winter landscape as a white snow dune arising from the wetlands,” said MAD founder Ma Yansong. Architectural photographer Iwan Baan traveled to this bone chilling destination, where temperatures drop to -30°C in winter, to capture the futuristic-looking building.
