New Zealand musician Nigel Stanford took various kinds of matter to demonstrate cymatics, the science of visualizing audio frequencies. In one of the examples, he takes a Chladni Plate – sand-covered thin metal surface attached to the top of a speaker – and plays different audio frequencies on a keyboard to move sand into mind-bending patterns. He also uses a vodka-filled petri dish taped to a speaker for playing audio frequencies of 50Hz and 100Hz to form standing waves in the liquid.
