That is great except the before does not match the after.

I recognize that guy. Wait a minute, umm, he's, umm, Agent Orange from Planet Citrus.

Great tutorial, found you at digg.com - Thanks.

@erik No shit.

So what happens when you have overlapping areas or areas that aren't realistic-looking? Instead of doing all of that camera work and suggesting some "proffesonal" touches, why not show us how to do the entire thing from start to finish? Lazy.

I think what erik meant is that the endpoint of the tutorial is not at all the same as the "After" shot shown at the beginning. It's pretty obvious that the shot was originally in color and that's what is shown at the start as the "After." In my experience, it's much easier and faster to simply paint on layer masks (either hue/saturation adjustment layers with 'colorize' selected, or normal fill layers using the color blend mode). That way, you can use soft brushes to paint color, and easily backtrack if you mess up on edges - avoiding the unnatural look of hard masked edges using the pen or lasso tools. Plus, since your eyes are much less picky about edge accuracy in color channels (vs. luminance), you won't notice if an edge isn't a perfect. Just a thought.

you're using the pen tool all wrong. you shouldn't need/use that many points :P

No Gimp examples?

The video itself was well-done, that this is definitely not a subtle or realistic way to do tinting. The best method is a technique called gradient-mapping. You should probably look it up for details on how to use it, but it basically involves saving a custom color gradient that contains all the different hues found in skin - from the very lightest, like when the skin catches the light, to those found in shadow. (You do this the same way you would make a new gradient to use with the gradient tool, by double-clicking on the currently selected gradient in the topmost toolbar, the long, horizontal one, to bring up the gradient editor.) This is important because in a photo there is actually LESS color in the parts of a person's skin that are less illuminated. Find a color photo of someone with approximately the same skin tone, LIT FROM AN ANGLE, for an easy way to sample this range of tones/colors with the eyedropper tool. When you have created a skin gradient, duplicate the layer you wish to tint, just in case, and select the skin however you wish (using the pen tool, etc.). Go to the Image menu, click Adjust, and selected Gradient Mapping. Beyond that, you'll probably need a visual guide to get more detailed help, but try playing around with it.

dude, the "after" image is not even the same as the "after" image in the video....the person took the colored image, made a black and white of it....then made a comparison of after and before....then made a dumb tutorial that doesnt even look like the original.
