How to: X-ray an Egg

You won't need an expensive machine for this, just an egg, some vinegar, and a bowl. Over the course of two days, you'll gradually see the egg's calcium carbonate shell dissolve. For those who've tried this before, does it work? Video after the jump.
Vinegar is acetic acid, CH3COOH, which would dissolve the calium carbonate into calcium ions, and release carbon dioxide (that explains for the bubble at beginning of the clip)

so the white color of the shell disolves away, and the clear part of the egg (i forget what it's called) fuses with the remaineder of the shell to make it all squishy? or what?

Old Trick: Put egg in vinegar, leave until shell is rubbery, grease up egg with oil, put burning paper in a milk bottle, let egg get sucked into bottle, pour milk into bottle, leave until reabsorbes calcium, clean out bottle, ask people how you got the egg in there, profit!

I tried that in 3rd grade, works perfectly, it's really cool to handle too...but it broke...that sucked:D

did this a little while ago, the shell disovles and leaves a semi-clear membrane around the yolk. You can also put the clear egg in cornsyrup and it will shrivel

Age old trick. Basic principle, acid dissolves alkali substances. Acid gets neutralised by alkali and vice versa to bring pH levels back to 7. Vinegar is acid, egg shell is alkali. Put them together and BINGO! Btw nice grift Old Guy ;)
