iBOT 4000: The Ultimate Wheelchair

The iBOT 4000 is a revolutionary mobility system that can "power across sand, gravel, grass and other uneven terrain, easily climb curbs up to 5” and steps, rise to an “eye-level” position and hold a conversation, even when you are on the move." Videos after the jump.
The iBOT Mobility System constantly realigns and adjusts its wheel position and seat orientation to keep the user upright and stable at all times, even when driving up and down curbs or inclines. I test drove the IBot 4000 on January 25, 2007. Overall it is an enginnering wonder! However, it has some dawbacks: 1. Turning radius is too large in 2 wheel mode and too destructive (lawn and carpet) in 4 wheel mode; 2. joystick delay on acceleration/deceleration annoying and potentially dangerous; 3. function/mode changing too cumbersome, too time consuming, and requires looking at LED screen (impossible in sunlight); 4. at $24,000+, far too expensive for the vast majority of potential users, like myself, who had careers where earnings were affected by their disabilities.
