Ice Pancake

They may look pancakes with freezer burn, but bust out the pan just yet. Called “flotillas”, these strange pancake-like discs were discovered floating down the River Dee in Aberdeenshire, Scotland – made from frozen ice and foam. The fact that they were spotted in Scotland, rather than Antarctica or the Baltic Sea is what baffles researchers. Continue reading for more pictures and information.

According to Inhabitat: “Cold temperatures in Aberdeenshire likely account for the formation of the pancakes. Throughout December, temperatures have been below freezing and have averaged around one degree Fahrenheit. ‘They are a rare occurance,’ Dick said, ‘and conditions have to be right for them to form.'”
