Marcus Kung’s Impeller Drone has no propellers, but instead uses centrifugal fans, or impellers for takeoff and landing. These impellers basically draw air from the back and push the air out sideways rather than in front, for propulsion. On this drone, the fans are configured similar to that of a 4-wheeled car, and boasts a special housing around the fan that directs the air-flow.
Aside from being much safer from object collision and irreversible damage to crucial components, impeller housing itself enables air to be pushed out with more force through the outlet, allowing drones to fly higher while using less power. One caveat: it functions similar to a leaf-blower or a hairdryer, which means lots of of noise.
