Intel used 300 of their custom “Shooting Star” drones to put on a stunning light display during Lady Gaga’s Super Bowl LI Halftime Show. More specifically, each drone measures approximately a foot long square, weighs just over eight ounces, and sports a plastic and foam body.
They communicate with each other wirelessly using a central computer to execute its dance routine, while the computer checks the battery level as well as the GPS signal strength of each drone just before showtime, and assigns roles accordingly. Reserve units were put on standby, and ready to take over within seconds should one (or many) falter. One thing you may not have known is that Intel had to tape the drone display long before the Super Bowl to avoid violating airspace rules.
