iPhone Costs Only $245.83 to Build

According to iSuppli Corp., the 4GB Apple iPhone costs only $245.83 to manufacture, with the 8GB model checking in at $280.83. What are your thoughts? View the breakdown after the jump.
That touchscreen that everyone is popping tents over only costs $33.50, with the touchscreen controller adding a mere $1.15 to the price. In fact, Apple stands to make a healthy 50% profit on both versions of the iPhone sold, with the costs of the 4- and 8-gig models only running $245.83 and $280.83, respectively

this is only building costs. to reach final price, you should add shipping costs, handeling costs, distribution costs, taxes ....

^^ Exactly. You have to factor in much more than the parts! I'm sure it cost millions to research and develop the most advanced phone/iPod ever made!

lawrman....the Sony phone that does the same things costs way less...this new iphone is not revolutionary at all...nor was the ipod or anything else Mac did...they just got lucky with a good (not in my opinion tho) product. the PS3 costs WAYYYYY more than how much the consumer pays for it...Apple is just screwing people over with crappy products. thus why i call them..Crapple.

Yeah... many other things should be taken into consideration... R&D, Publicity, shipping, taxes, administrative costs, etc...

the only crApple victims are their own dumb fashion consummers. the rest of the world will buy non limited version of this hardware. with any other brand on it

apparently they spend a boatload on research. Apple applys for at least 4 or 5 patents every year. So maybe they're trying to cover some overhead? At any rate, i bet 6 months after release (the intitial rush), they lower the price.

Still, even with the taxes, administration costs, distribution costs... it's still outrages to ask 500 dollars for a phone with a 2 year contract! Outrages!!

people, you'd be amazed if you knew what kind of markup you pay on everyday items. An item of this kind, you only buy every 2-3 years, so they only get once chance to profit off of you. and they do. the funny thing is that I though it would be $599 with the 2-year contract, meaning they would probably charge you $899 or something incredible like that without signing up with cingular.

I'm not gonna say its cheap, but comon guys....the question is not how much it costs. Is how much peopple is willing to pay. And the other thing is, have ever thought how much money Apple spent on research? They're no selling plastic pieces....

people keep talking about r&d, but it really isn't much of a stretch from what a lot of other manufacurers were already doing, and when it comes down to it they should bite some cost due to the fact that the model is really an apple store in your hand- they will rake profits hand over fist from the itunes store- what good is a media player with no media right? if ppl weren't so stupid as to want to buy a 600 dollar fashion statement they would think about the long term apple dollars that you will end up spending on it- unless a hack comes out- I am waiting to see iphone linux
