Most commonly known "as auroras, the International Space Station photographed a magnificent green and red hue from its orbit 200 miles up." The footage you're about to see was captured as the ISS traveled over the southern Indian Ocean on September 17, 2011. Continue reading to watch the video.

They are caused by radiation particles from the sun bouncing off Earth's atmosphere and are normally only seen in countries in the far north, such as Norway, but they've been spotted this time as far south as Oxfordshire and produced incredible skies over Northumberland.
