Amsterdam-based artist Tuomas Markunpoika takes normal pencils and then glues them together before milling them into functional vases. Each vase you see was created by individually gluing one pencil to another, taking advantage of the tessellating hexagonal shapes to form a solid block. These blocks were then treated like a chunk of wood and machined with a lathe into the form of a vase, revealing the inner structure of the pencils differently, forming a new pattern.
