Microsoft’s all-new “Project Zanzibar” is touted as a portable and flexible tangible interaction platform, but it’s essentially a smart mat. This rollable device blends the digital and physical worlds into one by using touch sensors, gestures, and objects, making it great for augmented reality applications. It utilizes several technologies to make this possible, including: sensing, near field communication (NFC), and multi-touch. The mat is able to uniquely identify objects if tagged with low-cost NFC stickers, while custom NFC tag allow these interactions to be extended.
