DARPA Helicopter

Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin company, has created a Sikorsky Autonomy Research Aircraft (SARA) helicopter for DARPA, based on the S-76, that can fly itself. That’s right, the 30-mile flight was planned, monitored, and executed by an operator using only a tablet device. It took off at a Stratford, Connecticut airfield and landed in Plainville, Connecticut. The copter uses MATRIX technology, the same system that used in the Optionally Piloted Black Hawk (OPBH) Demonstrator. This flight marks the successful completion of Phase 1 of DARPA’s ALIAS program, which aims to create and deploy greater levels of automation into existing military and commercial aircrafts.
