Nintendo announced today the official name for their upcoming Revolution system: "Wii". Video clip after the jump.
Wii has a distinctive “ii” spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play. Wii sounds like “we,” which emphasizes this console is for everyone.

it freezes halfway through... and i thikn revolution is a much better name than "wii" i mean they couldve gone wiht sumthing better like the Unes (ultimate nintendo entertianment system)...o shutup better than what you could think up (or apperantly nintendo)

One sylable?! THAT'S WEAK! THEY COULD HAVE GONE WITH SOMETHING MUCH MORE COMPLICATED AND COOLER SOUNDING THAN "WII!" LIKE... SOMETHING LIKE "RECREATION PLANET" WAIT, THAT SOUNDS PRETTY MUCH LIKE PLAY STATION. I BELIEVE THEY SHOULD HAVE STUCK WITH THE REVOLUTION. IT IS A REVOLUTION! WITH WII, WHAT COULD EXTREME GAMERS CALL IT? THE BIG W???? IT JUST DOESN'T MAKE SENSE. EVERY SINGLE NINTENDO SYSTEM UP TO NOW HAS HAD A NICKNAME. ORIGINAL NINTENDO HAD NES, SUPER NINTENDO HAD SNES, NINTENDO 64 HAD N64, AND GAMECUBE HAD "THE CUBE" OR SIMPLY GCN. THE GAMEBOY ADVANCE HAD GBA, THE DS HAS WELL... DS. THE PRONUNCIATION OF ALL OF THOSE JUST ROLL OFF YOUR TONGUE EASILY, AND IT IS VERY SIMPLE TO SAY... HAVE YOU ALSO NOTICED HOW THEY ALL HAVE SOME SORT OF "e" SOUND IN ALL OF THEM IN SOME WAY, SHAPE OR MANNER. THE WII ALREADY SOUNDS LIKE A NICKNAME, AND IT ALSO ALREADY SOUNDS LIKE A SYSTEM MEANT FOR BABIES. CRAPPY COMIC STRIP WRITERS WILL MAKE FUN OF THE NAME (EX: A BABY WITH OVERLY-EXAGGERATED FEATURES IS CRYING AND SAYING "I GOTTA GO WII-WII", THAT'S NOT EVEN FUNNY AT ALL!)

I agree, revolution would have been a better name. or the "powerfully extra-ordinary nintendo intra-person entertainment center" (PEnis)
6
Hrm, just a thought "Hey this is nintendo, 'wii' do not want to sell this consel to anyone so 'wii' came up with this crappy name"
7
Should be pronounced whyyyy
8
this is a fkn joke right? omg that's awful, no really i actually laughed when I read that.
9
No, no, no... They were doing so great... Why they changed the name to something so childish? The worst thing will be sayin "Now I´ll go play with my Wii..." It just doesnt sound good... "I GOTTA GO HOME TO PLAY WITH MY WII!"
10
WHY!?
11
Yeah the name sucks horribly. Revolution would have been better.
12
HORRIBLE. Leave it up to nintendo to think outside of the box and come up with something as crappy as Wii. You can't even say that without getting confused. No one will havea clue what your talking about when you say it.
13
wii are not amused.
14
Man Wii just goes down the drane I mean even Chipmunks falling off trees would sound better then wii. I mean what the crud man.
15
F that. what a crappy name im just gonna keep callin in revolution.
16
F that. what a crappy name im just gonna keep callin it revolution.
17
Hmm, it looks like they're trying to get the iPod crowd with the logo.

Stop hating... Live with it babies Wii does at least have a couple things going for it. First off, it's simple. Anybody can say it and anybody can remember it. This was not the case with Revolution, which is a fairly difficult word for the Japanese. The font for Wii also encapsulates the all-inclusion marketing speak Nintendo hopes to drive home with the console. And further, it promotes the multiplayer aspects that are bound to come. All of this makes me happy. Also think about the other retarded names out there Xbox 360, Intel Viiv Come on people Wii at least has a meaning the previous 2 are downright marketing ploys WTF does 360 have to do with anything videogame related and what is a Viiv???
19
Wow what a retarded name what were they thinking... obviously they weren't. Thats right nintendo follow the ways of the lowercase i...real original
20
I liked the speculated Nintendo Go name way better. They said "Wii" was simple? "Go" is way easier to get.
21
Stupid name. I think Nintendo's already failing market group, along with the new name will send it the way of the Dreamcast. Sad too. It's hard to watch a legend die. Tim Absath from ctrlaltdel-online sums it all up: Now I can play with my Wii all night long. Will we be able to connect our Wiis to someone else's Wii using wifi? Suddenly that sex toy controller makes so much sense... This is such a crime.
22
"Wii sounds like “we,” which emphasizes this console is for everyone." It also sounds like "wee" which is quite unfortunate. I can't believe they couldn't think of something better.
23
5od off, its amazing, wii will love it, wii will destroy, wii will rock u.... its more innovative then sonys next gens name.....
24
Hum...I guess they had a good idea... But...I don't think a lot of people are gonna like this name...
25
i wanna wii
