Carlos Owen is currently building an 18-foot tall "Bipedal Exo-Skeletal Robotic Vehicle" called NMX04-1A. He plans on having a fully-functional prototype ready by next summer. Video after the jump.
Initially our mechs will be used for entertainment purposes and will eventually be fitted to fight in a large arena designed to accommodate these great machines. The pilot control is a special system called mech interface manual integration control (mimic) system, designed specifically to allow the mech to emulate any movement done by the controlling pilot of the mecha

I always suspected the (classic, genre-defining, prescient) movie "Robot Jox" would eventually come to pass...

why is it sliding and not walking?

Most of the "walking" gigantic robots just slide...if you've seen the video of the one the Japanese guy built, it slides too. The problem lies in the balance; without a truly effective gyroscope or a means of shifting weight, if one of these robots lifted up one of their legs, the center of gravity would be placed outside the boundaries of the robot's base...in other words, fall over. By sliding, the base does not lose area, but instead changes shape, and as long as the center of gravity stays within the base it is stable. The dumb thing is is that the Japanese guy got asked by the Pentagon to do some weapons research, as probably this guy will be asked. We all like the idea of a giant walking deathmachine, but this kind of DIY robot isn't the answer. I'd look towards Honda or Toyota, or the company that built the "jaws of life" robot, really. Asimo with guns is a good idea.

Dude. This is so over. It's been over for almost a YEAR. Carlos scrapped this design because it couldn't walk. Then he tried to eBay it. No one bought. He's been 'working' on a another model since then, with no pictures, no updates, no nothing. This is dead, and has been dead for a long time.

Probably he's dead too! ahehehe got crashed by his piece of crap robot.
