Paper Pixels

Paper pixels, created by Aram Bartholl, is a "30 inch, 8 x 8 pixel, manually controlled screen" -- illuminated with 64 light bulbs in 4cm squares. Arranged in tilted rows, the bulbs can be controlled individually and used to display visual information through strips of paper. Video clip after the jump.

From the article: "The paper strip formed as an endless loop is approximately 3 m long which allows a programmable capacity of approximately 300 frames. The number of frames per second (fps) is determined by the speed at which the paper is pulled through the screen. The duration of the loop for an 8 x 8 pixel display at 10 fps is approximately 30 seconds."

the first 30 seconds of half-life 2? Is that what it said? wtf!? That looked nothing like half-life 2. On top of that this is stupid. There is absolutely NO practicality in this.

actually i think this is pretty neat! granted there really isnt much of a use for something like this other than aesthetics but since when has everything had to have some pragmatic purpose.

Actually, if you know the HL2 opening sequence well, there were a couple of very recognisable parts, although by recognizable I mean "blurry, 8 by 8 pixel rendition of gman".
