Cargo pilot Christiaan van Heijst may have long work days, but he definitely makes the best of it, and these surreal long-exposure captured from the cockpit of a Boeing 747 airliner prove it. Despite flying at 590 mph through the air, he holds his Nikon D800 camera by hand and pushes it into the corner of the window frame to hold it securely, as there is no room for a full-sized tripod. “One other trick to get sharp images in-flight is using a wide-angle lens. The further you zoom out (use wider angle view), the less any eventual movement will show in the photo. Imagine; let’s say you zoom in with a telephoto lens on the moon or a star and use a long exposure. Even the slightest movement of the camera, air or tripod could blur the image. Now imagine using a wide-angle lens to cover the entire sky,” said Heijst.
