Playstation 3 Will Cost Sony $900?

According to Merill Lynch, the Playstation 3 will cost Sony an incredible $900 per unit at launch. The IBM Cell Processor and Blu-ray drive alone account for over 60% of the total. All parts add up to only $800, but if you look closer, a price isn't listed for the detachable 2.5" HDD which may account for the remaining amount. In addition, the RSX GPU is priced at an incredibly low $70. Will this be the most expensive gaming console ever made (besides the Neo Geo)?
Lynch calls it an "expensive and difficult-to-manufacture product" because of the Cell processor and Blu-ray drive, which account for the lion's share of the backend parts costs (see above).

Yes it will be the most expensive console EVER! I think they will wait until 2007 to release the system just so the prices can do down a bit.
2
Are they serious $900!!!!???? That is ridiculous I would much rather buy a computer for that type of money. I bet there gonna charge like 80 a game too. Good luck Sony u guys r so smart.
3
Ugh, you guys know nothing about game consoles. For every XBox and 360 ever sold, Microsoft looses money. Why? Because they are charging LESS then the cost of what it is to make. Sony is going to do the same, no doubt. Money is made on the software, not the hardware.
4
yes, ps3 will lose money but there is a difference between 400 and 900. many kids don't have that kind of money
5
I could buy a 7200 gfx card computer for this much......... What the hell? AND THE POINT IS?
6
Just because the PS3 is going to cost Sony $900 doesn't mean they're going to sell it for that price. The 360 costs Microsoft a lot more then they sell it for. The actual income is from accesories and software. I can gauruntee you that the release price will be way less then $900/
7
I better switch my money to xbox360 instead...
8
let look into performance view..i think ps3 is more better..so the price will be more expensive than xbox360..but $900 is too expensive hehehe...
9
It's pointless to explain to all these American which they all think Xbox360 is THE console and don't understand a single bit about console business. Conscious buyer will wait for Sony and Nintendo all come out before giving any comment.

Come Guys...Are you really going to believe stats from a site that cant do simple addition? it comes out to 800 not 900. But yes every console maker looses money per unit...Thats why you get all that high tech gear packed in a small package, and you get it for a very good price (considering all its tech)...and then ya bitch about the game prices...well now you know why the games cost so much...they gotta get revenue somewhere.
11
thats not the cost of the box guys... thats how much it costs to make it. if sony releases ps3 at 900 bucks a pop no one will buy them. they will be released at the same or similar price as x-box 360. but by then ms can prolly slash prices on the x-box 360 and still ahve a better product.
12
It'll probably cost $600 at the least
13
sony has already confirmed thats its gonna be around 400~500
14
and besides that who's gonna trust a site that cant do math

"Come Guys…Are you really going to believe stats from a site that cant do simple addition? it comes out to 800 not 900." - Murc And apparently, you don't know how to read... the extra $100 goes to towards the detachable 2.5" HDD. Secondly, for the laat time, for the fools who actually think the PS3 will go for $900... IT'S NOT GOING TO BE SOLD FOR $900, MORONS! That's how much it costs SONY to MAKE A PS3, not how much it's going to cost YOU to BY A PS3! It's going to be worth $400 - $500. Sorry for the churlish attitude, but the stupidity is overwhelming. What's funny is that I don't even indulge in any of these games... all I have is a GameBoy SP, and an SNES in mint condition.
16
are you fucking serious ??
17
dont for get they will buy millions of parts so buying in bulk saves money

I don't want to take sides at all, cos i'm no fanboy! But can sony really afford to make the ps3 a loss leader? Their profits from non gaming divisions have been pretty poor lately, they're hoping for the ps3 to turn this around. Microsoft have deep pockets, and subsidising their consoles is something they can afford to do. Didn't it take something like 3 years for mircosoft to breakeven with the original xbox? Sony are gonna have a difficult time setting a price that'll recoup their investment and a price that consumers are actually gonna be able to pay. Wouldn't be surprised if we see expensive accessories (the strategy microsoft have gone for).

Sony's going to take a huge loss on the PS3 even if it doesn't cost $900 to produce if they want to stay competitive with Microsoft and Nintendo
20
i really hope it does cost $900, that means alot less playstation fanboys roaming the streets witht their hats on backwards "vice city, hellls yeah!" friking retards. i hate consoles anyway, in a year, the xbox 360 will be completely out of date compared to high end computers. sorry, im just an angry guy.
21
There is no way it will work at all if they charge twice as much as xbox 360 xbox will be the best console on earth for years and years if they charge $600 let alone $900 playstation will loose.
22
This is't normal but I don't think there gonna sell this for this price cause everyone will go to the XBOX360 cause dr isn't much of a hardware difference except the F****** Price
23
hey some news to all you sony die hards playstation 3 will get released at the earliest this fall, and guess what comes out this fall? Halo 3. Later Sony! http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/rumor/the-xbox-360-is-better-147569.php http://rsch1.ml.com/9093/24013/ds/276873_0.PDF http://www.ps3scene.com/

Just because this sites *says* that it will cost Sony that much, it doesn't mean they actually are paying that much to produce the ps3.. Also, it could just be hype. imagine what people will think: "oh, my ps3 is worth $900, and I got it for $400" when in reality, Sony didn't pay $900 to make that ps3, it cost them half that (just an estimate).
25
so what if it's 600, ps3 gonna be the cream of the crop, the cherry on a sundae MOUNTAIN... when blu ray comes out your gonna be paying around 300 bucks JUST for the blu ray player, then your getting this dream console/media centre that wont let you donw, not to mention it'll knock the shit out of xbox360
