PS2 Outselling XBox 360 in US

According to the NPD Group, Sony sold 231,000 PlayStation 2 units last month (May), while Microsoft only sold 220,000 XBox 360's.
Since the release of the Xbox 360, Microsoft has averaged 246,000 console sales each month in the US, while the PS2 has seen an average of 473,000 units—a number bolstered by an estimated 1.5 million sales in December alone. Leaving out December, Sony's average drops to 302,000 per month, still outpacing the Xbox 360 by a healthy margin

Here in Toronto, Canada....a PS2 is $129 CDN...while a premium xbox 360 is $499 CDN....hmmm...

exactly, what a pathetic excuse of a story, a machine 1/3rd the price, outselling a new machine, half the people buying ps2's are buying one to replace their old one thats probably broken like ps2's like to do.

Whoever is in charge of XBOX360’s marketing is inept at his job and here is why: 1. They didn't have enough units by launch. UNEXCUSABLE. You’re Microsoft for Christ sake GET-R-DONE! People who had them reserved got phone calls saying they were S.O.L. If you work a regular job (like I do) you cant’ afford to put up camp in front of a Best Buy for a week, which means you’re waiting around 4 MONTHS to get one. 2. The few who were lucky enough to get one were surprised to find out the units were overheating and dying on them. Thanks again Microsoft! Here's my favorite: 3. Just recently I was thinking, "Maybe I'll buy a 360 to hold me off until PS3 comes out in Nov. Then I find out that at the beginning of next year (2 months AFTER PS3's release) Microsoft will be changing the processors in there new 360's with ones that run faster and cooler. Moral of the story: There is absolutely no point in EVER purchasing a 360.

Yea, whats up with Microsoft? They havent been doing much with 360 since its launch. I havent seen anymore commercials, no hype, nothing lately. I hope they give PS3 a good fight to make things interesting.

I admit that I own a Xbox 360, but these numbers don't surprise me nor bother me in the least. Sony is the way to go.

yeah, maby they should be comparing not only # of consoles sold, but also the total gross profit of the console, game, and accesories. and just because PS2 is doing good, means that the PS3 will do good... think about it: if people are hesitant to pay $3-400 for a console, i think they will be hesitant for a $5-600 one...

Its not about who is making more money on the units, its about who is selling more. The more units they have out there, the more people will buy their games. They make more money on games than on consoles.

still, i find it funny that we say that 600$ is expensive when we pay 2000$ for a PC that cant do 1/2 the stuff a PS3 will. lol...i find it funny that a $100 MIT laptop can do so much more than a PS3...downloading porno for example. really, it makes me wanna punch you in the face when you say a PC cant do half the stuff that a PS3 will (not to mention that you do not know what its capable of, since its not out yet...numbers dont mean everything) ------------------------------------ And the guy who was blaming Microsoft's marketing dept...I suggest you to do some research behind the shortage issue. Apperently Microsoft did not want to have too many production plants running because as the time goes by, more efficient ways of making the system will be available. Besides, when the initial demand dies out, the extra fascilities will not be needed but will add up to the running cost. What they could do instead of having more production plants is that they could've delayed the launch. But Microsoft could not afford to do that since they wanted to be the first one to sell the 10th million unit as well as hit the Christmas timeline. System overheating and dying? Every console's 1st gen had some problem(s). Anyone remember the xbox thompson drives? or the defective PS2s? About as far as the new CPU being faster? Lol....you dont know what you are talking about. Microsoft chose a smaller dye (65nm from a 90nm...much like the new nVIDIA 7900 series)...and guess what? THE SPEED IS GOING TO STAY THE SAME. The only difference is that the processor is going to run at a much lower temperature. And one of the difference between playing on a console and on a PC is that memory/processor upgrades are not necessary to get the full performance out of the latest games on a console, while it is on a PC. Why? I will let you figure that out.

Timmy, Maybe you should get your hands on some real facts and out of your pants for a change. I find it amusing how you bought into Microsoft’s “We want our workers to have job’s for as long as possible” excuse for not having enough units by launch. The same Microsoft who just invested $1 Billion for cheap labor in India along with Intel and IBM. I’ve got a bridge for sale if you’re interested…. About the defective drives; the defective XBOX Thompson DVD ROMS far outweighed the defective PS2’s but that’s neither here nor there, the comment was about the current consoles. Now onto the processor remark you made. You ALMOST made sense with this one, the new processor will be going from 90 nanometers to 65 which will make them run considerably cooler, and this is true. Now the harsh reality; processors that run cooler run faster. And just so you know, I’ve been working for IBM in IT going on 6 years now, so I’d say I DO know what I’m talking about. Maybe you should figure out what you’re talking about before you “let us figure that out”. My suggestion to you?, The next time you feel like “venting”, punch yourself in face. Good Day.

It means that Microsoft wants to save some money, not save jobs. "the comment was about the current consoles". Well, what other current gen consoles are out right now so that you can compare them with 360? None, thus we turn to history and see the trend in the last gen. Besides, you have no figures to indicate exactly what percent of xbox/ps2s were defective in order to reach the conclusion that there were more defective xboxes then ps2s? Whoops, "Maybe you should get your hands on some real facts and out of your pants for a change." "processors that run cooler run faster". Yes, but not in the sense that you said. What it simply means that lets say if it operates at 3.0 GHz per sec at 60 degrees, in the newer 6nm process it can operate at 40 degrees. However, if you increase the voltage (like any overclocker would know) the processor will operate at a faster frequency lets say 4.0 Ghz, but the core would reach 60 degrees celcius like the older dye model. What Microsoft is trying to achieve here is a cooler processor, not a faster one (having CONSOLES with different configuration is pointless). The extra speed (that Microsoft wont give you would not make your 360 games any faster (actually, it might make them move faster in which case you should hope you dont get one). And this is internet Sir, you could claim that you are John Titor back to 2006 for all we know ;)
