Earthquake Resistant Concrete

University of British Columbia (UBC) researchers have developed an eco-friendly concrete that can be sprayed onto the exterior of buildings to make them as strong as steel and capable of withstanding many unforeseen disasters. Called Eco-friendly Ductile Cementitious Composite (EDCC), it's mainly comprised of an industrial by-product called fly ash, which makes it durable, malleable and much more ductile than normal concrete. The research team sprayed EDCC on concrete block walls one-half inch thick, and then simulated a magnitude 9 earthquake. "The results of these tests have been amazing. We can shake the wall extensively without it failing," said UBC engineering Ph.D. candidate Salman Soleimani-Dashtaki. Click here to view the first image in today's viral picture gallery.
