Top Gear personality James May takes the GM Hy-Wire concept out for a road test. This vehicle is touted as the first drivable concept to combine a hydrogen fuel cell with by-wire technology. On the inside, you'll find "a single unit called X-drive that is easily set to either a left or right driving position" -- allowing steering, braking, and other functions to be controlled electronically rather than mechanically. Video clip after the jump.

This is great to see. There was a story a few weeks ago on digg.com abot the guy who pretty much invented the H2O to HHO process for a blow-torch, and also converted his car to drive for hundreds of miles on 4oz of water. The US government and a top car manufacturer were touted as being interested to talk to him. Naturally I guess, all the digg'ers claimed that that would be the end of it, the project would be buried due to the potential lost of revenue for the government and car makers...
... yet here we are with GM making a prototype using this very technology! Good to see the digg'ers got it wrong, and great to see a US company leading the way on this potentially planet-saving idea!

I want one! But I think that it might be a bit expensive. How much is 5 million "quid" in $?

@B.K. actually this is not the thing that the guy with the blowtorch and car had. This is the same Hydrogen powered engine that's been in development for decades. Finally coming to some kind of useful concept.
But (Big BUT) there's still the problem of where do we get the energy to convert the water to the hydrogen cell. The energy isn't free. It takes more energy to make the fuel than it does to drive. We also have to think about alternative energies to run power plants to make the H-fuel. But that's still a much better solution than billions of fossil fuel burning cars.

...unless the sugar -> hydrogen germ powered fan technology in the latest post gets there?

5 million quid is 9,078,000 USD. Quite expensive but that is only because it is the only one.

Damn I like it, reminds me of cars they've got in futuristic animes. With large glassy spacey interiors

Wow,I knew it, that thing they found in Area 51 would eventually be reverse engineered and its technology would work in our favor!
